How To Coach Yourself in 5 Steps
When I first started being a life coach, I really wanted a purpose in life that was bigger than myself.

Many people mistakenly believe that happiness comes from someone or something. If my spouse would compliment me more, or if I had a better relationship with my family. If I just had this job, or this car, or this house—then I would be happy.
My friends, there is a reason they say that money doesn’t buy happiness.
You create your own happiness. And guess what?
It doesn’t cost a thing.
I have studied and I have researched and I have learned everything I can on problem solving and self coaching. Through my research I developed the Model that I teach in my monthly program, Self Coaching Scholars, and I am going to share with you what the Model means and why.
Step #1: You are not your life.
Are you waiting for the world to change so that you can feel the way you want? You better stop. The world isn’t changing for you and even if it did—it wouldn’t change the way you feel.
This is because you are not your life. You are not your circumstance. The way you feel, your happiness, has nothing to do with the outside world.
There is you and there is your life. These are very different things. If you want to achieve your goals, the first step is to separate yourself from the thing you are struggling with.
There is this thing in the world. And then there is you. You are 100% worthy, lovable, and capable, despite anything that is going on in your life.
I will say it again for my friends in the back. It doesn’t matter what you have done. It doesn’t matter how many mistakes you have made. You are 100% worthy, lovable, and capable.
So stop waiting on your situation to change to find happiness and achieve your goals.
Step #2: You are not your brain.
We all have thoughts.
Thousands of thoughts.
Thousands of thoughts that run throughout our brain all day. Unconscious thoughts. Unsupervised thoughts.
They are just thoughts—they are not who you are.
If our thoughts are unconscious then where do they come from? Like many things in life, they were taught. We have learned them and they are part of our programming. Someone who was raised to believe that they are not good enough will unconsciously think everything they do is unworthy.
Just because they think they are not good enough, doesn’t mean they are really not good enough. This is because your thoughts do not determine who you are. You are not your thoughts and you are not your world.
Imagine if all your programmed thoughts were unknowingly working against you every day.
If you want to achieve your goals you have to practice actively thinking about what you are thinking about. You have to separate yourself from your thoughts so that you can decide what you want to think on purpose.
It sounds easier than it is. It takes work, but it is so worth it.
Step #3: You can create the feelings you want.
Once you open the door to supervising your thoughts, you can start controlling how you feel.
How you think = how you feel.
That is really powerful. I just told you that you can create how you feel.
If your feelings create your actions and your actions create results, then that means you have the power to achieve the life you want to create.
Have you ever stopped and taken a moment to reflect on the thoughts you are having? I bet if you have you found there were a good amount of negative thoughts. The trouble with negative thoughts is that they make you feel negative. And who wants that?
Don’t confuse what I am saying with the idea that you should always feel happy and never feel sad. There are times when we want to feel unhappy. If someone close to us dies, we want to feel that emotion.
Most people believe happiness and joy is the point of the world. The truth is we don’t have happiness without unhappiness.
To avoid unhappiness we seek pleasure outside ourselves. We immerse ourselves in social media, or shopping, or drinking, or eating, or whatever. And we are afraid of being afraid.
You can feel anything you want. There are times to feel unhappy. For all of the other times though, you need to learn to recognize the negative thoughts you are having so that you don’t feel negative all the time.
You can reprogram your brain to think positive thoughts. The thoughts you want to have. When you do this, you gain control of your feelings. You will then have the power to feel however you want, whenever you want.
Step #4: Failing is better than procrastination.
Now you know the steps to take to feel how you want, it is is time to take action towards achieving your goals.
Will you ever fail? Of course! And that is okay. Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid of procrastination. Failures are steps toward your goals. Procrastination takes you nowhere.
This step is really important. So many people are afraid of failure. Failure is not the enemy. Procrastination is.
You will succeed as many times as you fail but you will never get to where you want to be if you don’t try and try again. 50% of the time you will succeed and 50% of the time you will fail—and that is okay. It’s better than okay, it’s glorious!
What is not okay is not trying again or procrastination.
So go out there and try; try hard. And if you fall, get up, wipe off your knees, and try again. Try harder. This is how you reach your goals.
Everyone in this world has a purpose. If you are procrastinating, you are not living the life you were meant to live.
Step #5: Your future is your property.
Are you deciding what you want your future to be? Do you have goals? You should.
You determine whether your future is amazing by what you create, what you decide, and what you do.
In your life, there is the past, the present, and the future. The only thing that exists right now is the present. What determines the future is how you think about it.
Here is what I want you to know: the only thing that exists about the past is your thoughts. If you don’t take hold of your future it will be a replica of the past. This is because your brain likes to be efficient and it does this by thinking the same things over and over again. It will continue to do this for your future if you don’t take action.
You take action by putting these five steps to use. Know that your circumstances are neutral—they do not determine your happiness. Your thoughts have been programmed and you must learn to think intentionally. Your thoughts determine how you experience the world, they create your feelings and your feelings drive your actions.
This is how you achieve anything you want in life.
Your future is your property. Take a hold of it. Decide what you want for it and go after it. What are you waiting for?
