Video: Fat Belief System

Hi, it's Brooke Castillo from The Life Coach School. Today, I want to talk to you about your fat belief system and your primary programmers. One of the most important things to understand when it comes to weight loss is the reason why you're overeating in the first place is usually because of your belief systems. So many of us have some pretty deeply ingrained belief systems that we've been thinking for many, many, many years that we don't even realize what we're thinking. We don't even realize that they are there so one of the things that I want you to do is start paying attention to what those thoughts are.

The first thing that I wanted you to do is think about all the thoughts you have and remember a belief is just a thought you keep on thinking. What are all the thoughts you have about your body, about your weight, about your ability to lose weight, about the reason why you're overweight. Typically when we start doing this work with clients, clients come up with horrendous belief systems that are driving their inability to lose weight. There's something wrong with me, I have a really slow metabolism, I'm not going to be able to fix it, I can't stop overeating, I'm completely out of control, this is just my genetics, I'm never going to be able to stop this.

Those are just like a sprinkling of some of the thoughts that maybe coming up for our clients and if you have that as your fat belief system you are always going to be trying to work against it and that will make your weight loss effort so much more challenging. First, you have to just to be aware of those thoughts and notice how all of those beliefs are driving your emotions and what you eat. If you believe that there's something wrong with you and that you're never going to be able to lose weight, you're not going to be very inspired to eat only when you're hungry. You're not going to be very inspired to just eat fuel because what's the point?

You'll notice yourself rebelling against yourself because at the end of the day you know your belief is that you're never be able to lose weight anyway. When you think about losing weight what comes up for you? What are your beliefs about that? Those beliefs about that, those beliefs really matter. You need to write them down. The next thing that we do is we talk about creating a new religion, a new set of beliefs around weight loss. What do you want to believe? What do you think is possible? Now, remember it's really challenging to go from one really negative belief there's something wrong with me to, "I'm thin a beautiful and perfect," right?

It's too big of a leap so what we're trying to do is just take the negative thoughts that we know that we don't want. We take those beliefs and we try to neutralize them, we take them from, "I'm never going to be able to lose weight," to, "Maybe I can lose two pounds." Right? We're not talking about losing 50 yet but we're just focused on something that believable and something that we can focus on for now. Eventually we can move that over to the 50 pounds but we like to slightly change the beliefs so we can try them on, make sure the fit, make sure we can believe them and then practice them long enough and then we graduate to another one.

First, find out what your fat belief system is then change it slightly, then change it slightly similar until eventually you have the belief system that you want. Many people will ask me, "Why do we have these belief systems? Where did they come from?" What I like to offer is that typically we have some primary programmers. Our brain is like a computer, it really doesn't care what it thinks, it just wants to think it efficiently. That's how it was designed so whatever you give it to think it practices it and gets very good at finding evidence for it. That way it can just have some passive thought programming going on that it doesn't have to think about thinking.

That's fine when it's a positive thought but when it's a negative thought that we're thinking in the background unconsciously and we get really good at thinking it because we've practiced it so much we don't even notice that we have it. We got to slow down. What did your primary programmers tell you about losing weight? Maybe your primary programmers are your parents but maybe they are the first diets that you went on, maybe something you heard from a nutritionist. Find out who are those primary programmers. What did they teach you and what did you believe and what are you still believing about what they taught you.

Knowing what you believe will help you determine what your results are going to be. If you believe that you can't lose weight, you won't lose weight. That's just math. If you believe that you can maybe lose a little bit then you'll lose a little bit and eventually if you think you can lose it all I absolutely guarantee that you can but you can't do anything unless you believe it. Find out who your primary programmers are, find out what you believed and then decide to change it.
