Hi, it's Brooke Castillo from The Life Coach School and today I'm going to talk about “I don't know.”
“I don't know” is probably one of the most common things you will ever hear from a client and from yourself. It's one of those thoughts that seems like it's true, it seems innocent but it is the biggest dream blocker, biggest blocker to self-realization that I've ever seen. I always say to my students, "I don't know is not allowed in this class." It doesn't matter that I say that because they always say it. Anytime I ask them a question it's, "I don't know." It's like our default answer.
Notice that when you say, "I don't know" it completely blocks access to yourself when you start inquiring. Think about that, why do you think I don't know and when you think it, does it serve you? There are times when admitting that we don't know something is really powerful and admitting that we don't know something about someone else is really powerful but most of the time when we say, "I don't know" what we're saying is that we don't know something about ourselves. What I always remind us of is that if you don't know, nobody does. If you're looking out there for the answers, you're never going to find them because they're all within you.
Notice that as you go through your coaching practice, your training, working with clients and working with yourself. When you say, "I don't know" or "I'm confused" how that blocks you and invite yourself to maybe not have those thoughts appear.
The last thing I want to add is when those thoughts do appear, it doesn't mean you've done something wrong. What it usually means is that you're tapping in to knowledge that maybe you didn't know before and now that you're starting to kind of uncover it, your brain is shutting down because it's not really good at discovering new things about itself, right? It's shutting down, it's easier just to think, "I don't know". It's a pattern so when it appears, take it for it is and then find your answers.
