Video: The Watcher

Hi, it's Brooke Castillo from The Life Coach School and in this video, I'm going to talk to you about the concept of The Watcher.

When I first learned about the concept of The Watcher, I was fascinated. I think the person that taught me this the best is Eckhart Tolle because he basically asked the question when you're watching your mind think, when you're observing your own thinking, who are you? Who is The Observer? I was: What the what?!

We think we are our thoughts, but if you aren't thinking or if you're watching yourself think, then who are you when you're doing that? I really realize that this practice of observing my own thoughts was taking me out of my mind and therefore, releasing me from being at the effect of my mind.

Here's what I mean by that: When I went through the process of stopping long enough to pay attention to what my mind was thinking, I was really able to recognize that those thoughts are not who I am. I am the person observing those thoughts. My brain is running thoughts, but I am not my brain. If you really get that, your mind can explode, if you allow it; to really understand that.

The other thing that's really powerful about that is when you are observing your mind, you are in a state of peace and that's a trip because you can be going through a lot of turmoil in your mind and that can be creating a lot of negative emotion, but when you go into the process of observing your mind, you are separated from that for that moment.

That's why we love to teach to our clients the practice of being The Watcher because it relieves them from the effect if they're going through something very negative. As a coach, it is your job to be The Watcher of your mind and to pay attention to what's going on in there. It's also your job to teach your client to be The Watcher of their mind. Now, of course, you will be The Watcher of their mind as well, but the power comes from learning how to be The Watcher and The Observer of your mind.

One easy way to get started with doing this is by writing down what's in your brain. We do a process we call a thought down load. Whenever you're having any kind of negative emotion, sit down with a piece of paper and just write down your thoughts. Then read your thoughts. When you are the reader of your thoughts, you are associating with being The Watcher and you are not actually thinking them.

That is the first way to really get into that process because to write down your thoughts, you have to watch yourself think, so I really want to encourage you to try this. Sit down right now, write down all your thoughts on a piece of paper and notice how it feels to do that process. Get a taste of being The Watcher.
